there's a chance you sacrifice the tone your looking for so doing the level adjustments on a mixer is preferred. If you have to roll back the volume on your guitar pedals etc. One thing for jamming is adjusting everyone's levels. However if you have a mixer, you use that to control the volume level of each input, and then use the amp to just send out the signal to multiple sources. It's really just a switch between two inputs. Does this means that you can't listen to both input channels at the same time though the headphones? or it's for adjusting a different level for each one of the channels?You CANNOT listen to both channels through the amp at the same time.
